Welcome to the first edition of Yard Work!

We hope this periodic update will provide helpful information to our tenants, neighbors, community and development partners, and elected officials on the extraordinary amount of activity going on in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Yard is in the midst of its largest expansion since WWII driven by the continued strong demand for our space, even during these challenging economic times. In this edition of Yard Work, we focus on the ongoing transformation of the Yard into a model for sustainable industrial parks. This was recently highlighted by the ribbon cutting for the nation’s first multi-story, multi-tenanted green industrial building and the publication of our Green Business Directory. The Directory profiles the rapid emergence of green manufacturers in the Yard. Also in this edition, we highlight a unique opportunity to develop the Admirals Row site for the benefit of the local community.

This past fall, the Brooklyn Navy Yard began regularly scheduled public tours for the first time since its establishment in 1801 and the fascination and intrigue about getting "behind the gates" has only grown. These tours weave together a vibrant mix of history, historic preservation, sustainability and economic development. From our 240 tenants come stories of family businesses thriving through generations, manufacturers deciding to green their practices, music icons filming their next video, or residents from surrounding communities finding well-paying industrial jobs through our Employment Center.

It is our hope that Yard Work will highlight this growth, our unique tenant base, and our efforts to both green the Yard and celebrate its rich history.
