Assistant General Counsel

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (“BNYDC”), a not-for-profit corporation that manages and develops the Brooklyn Navy Yard as an urban industrial park, is seeking an assistant General Counsel.  The Office of the General Counsel currently consists of a General Counsel and a Deputy General Counsel.  We are seeking to add a new lawyer who will report to the General Counsel. 

Responsibilities
¨         Drafting leases.
¨         Drafting vendor contracts
¨         Working with Deputy General Counsel to insure that BNYDC is properly protected by insurance.
¨         Advising, both orally and in writing, executives and middle management on legal issues as they arise.
¨         Providing legal support for complex development deals.
¨         Working with, and sometimes supervising, outside counsel.

Qualifications: 
¨         Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.  Works well with others and enjoys team work.
¨         Interest in, and experience in, Real Estate transactions, ideally both leasing and complex development deals.
¨         Self-starter – we are looking for someone who is interested in responsibility for whole projects.

Education and/or Experience: 
Degree from an accredited law school and member of NY Bar required.
At least five years experience in law firms, corporate legal departments or public sector preferred.
Experience working with the public sector (whether in the public sector or not) is a plus.
Interest in Real Estate law, construction law and/or insurance is a plus.

Salary Range:  Commensurate with experience.
