For the first time ever, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) will offer regular tours of the 300-acre industrial park and provide access to significant sites that have historically been off-limits to the public.
Beginning this weekend, BNYDC, in partnership with the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) and the Center for the Urban Environment (CUE), will offer guided tours of the former military base. The launch coincides with Open House New York, and is a program of the developing Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92. Please visit www.bnyc92.org for more information.
Following the Program launch on October 4 and 5, regular public tours of the Yard will be offered on the first Sunday of the month, alternatively by the Brooklyn Historical Society and the Center for the Urban Environment.

This guided bus tour will take curious visitors into the Yard to stop at eight sites that tell the story of the Brooklyn Navy Yard?s rich and illustrious history, reveal what is going on in the Yard today, and enlighten visitors about the Navy Yard?s exciting development as a model sustainable industrial park. Included in the tour are historic landmarks and significant sites including the third oldest dry dock in the country where the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor was outfitted, as well as the Nation?s first multi-story “green” industrial building.
The Navy Yard is an intriguing neighbor for many Brooklynites and these tours will no doubt satisfy curiosity seekers.
On Saturday October 4, more than 30 Brooklyn Navy Yard artisans and artists will also open their studios to the public from 12-6pm. For more information about the BNY Arts Open Studio, visit http://bnyarts.com. |
