Job Description

Coordinator of External Affairs

 

The Coordinator of External Affairs the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) will support efforts to raise visibility of the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a national model for sustainable urban industrial parks, increase funding opportunities and generate public support and interest through coordinated communications, marketing, and fundraising strategies.  This position will report to the VP of External Affairs.

Communications/Marketing (45%)

  • Support and lead the creation of compelling, persuasive, relevant, and accurate communications content that will increase funding, visibility, and visitorship to the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, BNYDC’s unique exhibition, visitors, and employment center.
  • Identify opportunities to promote BNYDC through events, panel/guest speaking opportunities, and awards/recognition opportunities
  • Help implement a communications and marketing strategy to ensure high-impact digital communications
  • Create awareness campaigns that engage funders and target audiences
  • Produce content for newsletter, website and other communications that will support fundraising goals and outreach efforts

 

BLDG 92 Grant/Donor Management (35%)

  • Help identify, cultivate, and build relationships with public and private funders as well as members
  • Support the expansion of a membership program through prospect research, identifying opportunities for reciprocal membership, and innovative strategies to reach members.
  • Coordinate database input and gift processing, donor correspondence and mailings
  • Help formulate annual marketing and gift plans, drafting letters, coordinating mailings, and providing administrative support
  • Document all prospecting, donation and acknowledgement activities
  • Assist in funding reports
  • Support the management and coordination of special events to engage members and cultivate prospective funders

General Administrative support and other tasks as needed (10%)

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Some experience maintaining donor databases and interacting with a membership or volunteer base.
  • Experience coordinating and assisting with special events
  • Experience maintaining mailing lists and developing/sending mailings
  • Developing effective working relationships with members, donors, government and foundation representatives and others to nurture their connection to the organization.
  • Genuine interest in the mission of BNYDC and BLDG 92
  • The ability to write well, to speak articulately and forcefully, and to work on a number of projects independently and simultaneously with close attention to detail
  • Familiarity with city, state or federal legislative and funding processes a plus, as well as an ability to read, understand and summarize proposed laws and draft testimony
  • Previous membership, marketing, sales, or related experience in a relevant field
  • Comfortable with public speaking and presentations
  • Strong computer, internet, research and database skills

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university preferred; at least 3 years of hands-on development experience including direct mail, telemarketing, and online fundraising in a similar non-profit environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
