Oral History Project
Women were hired to fill
trade positions for the first time at the
Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II. With
many men away serving in the military, women
who stayed home did their part for the war effort
working subassembly on ships at the Brooklyn
Navy Yard. They worked as pattern makers,
pipe fitters, welders, and "Rosie the Riveters." Surprisingly
little exists to document this critical period
of women's history in New York City, and it
is urgent that we do what we can now to preserve
the cultural legacy. In partnership
with local author Jennifer Egan and the Brooklyn
Historical Society, the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development
Corporation is capturing these experiences and
memories in its first oral history project: "Women
at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during WWII." |
