Job Title: Custodial Services Supervisor

Employment Status: Full-time, Non-exempt

Department: Property Management

Reports To: Custodial Services Manager

Salary: $38-$40/hour

Schedule: Wednesday-Sunday, 2:30pm-11pm



The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is a not-for-profit corporation that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Yard on behalf of its owner, the City of New York. The position of Supervisor will work closely with the Custodial Services Manager to manage frontline staff and multiple facilities inspections.

Areas of Responsibility
  • Manage team of 9+ laborers, mentoring and providing staff with training and professional development opportunities
  • Delegate tasks & monitor productivity, issue janitorial supplies and equipment
  • Manage staff schedules, maintain timekeeping and personnel records
  • Resolve employee and tenant complaints, concerns, and conflicts
  • Support the Custodial Services Manager with administrative tasks & facility initiatives
  • Ensure general safety of daily operations
  • Conduct daily building walk-throughs with Custodial Services Manager, complete facility inspection reports
  • Conduct daily checks of maintenance closets and equipment for safety and cleanliness
  • Assist with special event coordination
  • Perform snow removal
  • Ability to be flexible for urgent situations. i.e. weather-related conditions, leaks, and outages
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated people leadership skills. Effective at managing & developing a team
  • Proficient oral and written communications skills. Must be able to effectively respond to the needs of employees and tenants
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain a positive, productive atmosphere in a fast-paced, loud environment with numerous interactions and interruptions
  • High degree of initiative, self-motivation and ability to motivate others
  • Ability to develop and implement effective staff training procedures
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • 4+ years of facility management/janitorial experience
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience, preferably in a Unionized environment
  • Ability to work evenings/weekends as needed
  • Equipment repair and maintenance knowledge preferred
