Job Title: Lead Builder
Salary: $30 - 35/hr.
The Albert C. Wiltshire Employment Center recruits qualified candidates for positions within the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a 300-acre industrial park housing over 400+ businesses within the manufacturing, food, media, technology, and creative field.
A Brooklyn Navy Yard company is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Lead Builder. We are looking for a skilled individual proficient in fine woodworking with 5+ years’ experience. This individual exhibits a thorough understanding of wood science and fin woodworking techniques, is self-motivated and enjoys working as part of a respectful and collaborative team. We’re looking for a candidate with expansive thinking who is intentional, focused, engaged and curious.
Essential Functions:
- Multi-task, prioritize deadlines with simultaneous work assignments in a goal-oriented, collaborative environment.
- Construct pieces from start to finish autonomously at times and collaboratively at times
- Build with consistency, maintain/improve speed and accuracy from project to project.
- Learn and adapt to new methods and techniques. Help to ideate and work closely with the team to better methods and practices across the build department.
- Regularly provide feedback for the editing of shop drawings and documentation of updated build methods/processes as needed to continually improve processes and communication to the team at large.
- Devise and build jigs as necessary to find efficiencies within the build
- Mill and prepare lumber/sheet goods utilizing saws, jointers, planers and sanding machinery.
- Sand and prep work for finishing when necessary
- With a keen eye for detail, ensure every product meets EC’s exacting standards
- Work within production timelines/ goals, keep an accurate account of hours through Harvest Time app.
•Utilize hand tools and operate machinery in accordance with safety standards for self and team at all times.
- Maintain, update and augment as necessary shop safety rules in accordance with OSHA and EC safety standards.
- Act as the point of contact for machine maintenance and safety. Keep logs, repair, replace parts – work with the team at large to ensure machines are at optimal operation and safety levels.
- Self assess and make adjustments as necessary to address or correct fabrication hurdles in order to maintain EC’s quality standards.
- Work with other team members to expedite the production schedule.
- Skill share and provide practical training with other team members whenever helpful or necessary.
- Provide feedback within a team setting to continually improve processes.
- Assist with lumber deliveries.
- Take ownership of general upkeep of the premises and participate in team upkeep efforts

Physical Demands: Physical requirements include regularly lifting / carrying of up to 50 pounds of furniture and other heavy materials; ability to push and pull carts weighing up to 250 pounds; visual acuity, speech, and hearing; hand and eye coordination; and manual dexterity necessary to operate machinery. Subject to sitting, standing (8 hrs /day), reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, stretching, walking, twisting, and kneeling to perform the essential functions.
Work Environment: This job operates out of our Manufacturing Facility at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. This is a fulltime, 40-hours a week position. The Lead Builder role is an in-person position and cannot be performed remotely.
