Job Title: Safety Manager
Employment Status: Full-time, Exempt

Reports To: SVP, Property Management
Salary: $80,000 - $90,000
Summary
The Safety Manager will be responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe working environment for all Brooklyn Navy Yard employees, tenants, and visitors by ensuring compliance with safety regulations and guidelines. The primary focus of this role will be to identify potential hazards, implement preventative measures, conduct safety investigations, and provide training to enhance the overall safety culture within the Navy Yard.
Areas of Responsibility
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and processes to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to safety standards
- Collaborate with department heads, employees and tenants to assess and mitigate safety risks associated with their work areas
- Investigate incidents and near misses to determine root cause and recommend corrective action
- Develop and implement safety policies and programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Provide safety training programs to employees, including orientation sessions, ongoing training, and refresher courses
- Maintain safety documentation, including incident reports, safety records, and training records
- Stay up to date with industry best practices, new regulations, and emerging safety trends, and make recommendations for continuous improvement
- Conduct emergency response drills and ensure emergency preparedness plans are in place and regularly reviewed
- Collaborate with external agencies, such as regulatory bodies and emergency response services, to ensure compliance and effective response during emergencies
- Meet with Senior Leadership to establish goals and implement cultural safety initiatives
- Conduct and Manage Safety Committee meetings with employees and managers
- Perform other duties and ad-hoc projects as needed
Required Skills and Abilities
- Ability to conduct safety inspections and audits effectively and provide recommendations for corrective actions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and educate designated personnel on safety procedures and policies
- Detail oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in using safety management software and Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to work in various environments, including construction sites or manufacturing facilities
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with tenants, employees, and management
- Ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations
- Ability to prepare clear and accurate records and reports
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, industrial engineering, or a related field required
- 3+ years of proven experience as a Safety Officer or similar role, preferably in a manufacturing, construction, or industrial setting
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations and guidelines
- Strong understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, and control measures
- Basic familiarity with fire and building codes of the City of New York
- Basic familiarity with construction techniques and methods
- Valid driver’s license
- Building and Life Safety NFPA 101 certification
- OSHA 30, OSHA 501, and 511 preferred, but not required
