We are again planning our summer youth program for college-age young adults. The goal of the program is to provide worthwhile work experiences for youngsters living in the communities surrounding the Brooklyn Navy Yard. We know that we can count on your support.
The goal of our Summer Young Adult Skills Introduction Program is to place young people directly in private sector work environments and give them the opportunity to learn about the work-place and specific skills needed for certain industries. Funding for this program is provided by the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) and is included in our annual budget. This program is funded in part by support from the JP Morgan Chase Foundation. This is an outstanding opportunity for some of the young people who live in the communities that surround the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Under the program, BNYDC will hire up to 30 qualified college-age young people to be placed in the operations of various tenants and to provide administrative and clerical help in our offices. Students must be at least 18 years old. We will begin distributing applications by April 15. Copies of the application form are available by clicking here or calling, Annamarie Vilardi at (718) 907-5924. Hiring will be on a very competitive basis.
THE DEADLINE FOR ALL APPLICATIONS WILL BE JUNE 3, 2011
Each of the students will participate in an orientation session, hosted by BNYDC. Basic pre-employment skills will be taught at that time. The students will work a 35 hour workweek plus a one hour lunch break each day. The program will be for eight weeks, beginning in late June.
Tenants will be asked to provide the student with a meaningful skills-learning experience. Again, our goal is to help interested students learn about the work place and about different industries in which they might want to work following the completion of their education. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain an extra set of hands for the summer and to make a difference in the life of one of the area’s young people.
I am confident that the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation’s summer youth program will demonstrate in a meaningful way the commitment of BNYDC to improve the quality of life for our neighbors.
