Job Title: Full Stack Founding Software Engineer
Employment Status: Full-Time
Salary: $140,000
The Albert C. Wiltshire Employment Center recruits qualified candidates for positions within the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a 300-acre industrial park housing over 400+ businesses within the manufacturing, food, media, technology, and creative field.
A Brooklyn Navy Yard company is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Full-Stack Founding Software Engineer to be a key member of our growing multidisciplinary team.
Your core responsibility will be to work with other engineers on building the tenant and property owner facing features of our software product, as well as rolling up your sleeves and diving into hardware-software systems design, site visits, customer interactions, sales and discovery. You will collaborate intensively with the broader team. This role is a great opportunity to drive the development of an impactful product, but at this early stage there is always so much to do that you’ll end up getting involved in all kinds of company activities. There will be several different growth paths available to you.
We have two key components of our product: property owner and rental tenant-facing. By the time you start, both of these products will be somewhere between MVP and beta (tested and deployed in first pilot projects, but not yet feature-complete). You’ll be working with our customer-facing and data operations teams to build a software stack that enables our company to meet the needs of different types of users.
You’ll drive Fram Energy’s success by:
Building scalable foundations that will support high velocity growth. You will be writing code for backend architecture for the long term. We started off by building the product in its simplest form, and it will become more complex as we add more features and users. Our philosophy is to build for scalability from day 1. You will drive decisions on architecture and implementation.
Improving UX & frontend development through user obsession. You will be writing code for the frontend of our product. We’re striving to deeply understand what tenants and property owners need when it comes to energy billing (tenants) and solar investments (owner). Because UX and frontend development play a big role in delivering our companies value proposition to our users, you’ll play a big part in shaping how users interact with our product.
Solving interesting technical problems. This will be a job full of problem solving and creativity. Many of your days will be spent finding elegant and practical ways to deal with problems that pop up, both in the code and in the broader challenge of billing tenants for electricity. You’re encouraged to experiment in order to find the best solution.
Hustling as part of our founding team! In this early stage, everyone will help out beyond their job description, and every person on the founding team has the chance to grow their skills in directions they find meaningful.
What we’re looking for (attributes & qualifications)
Attributes
Resourceful & curious You think in solutions, not in obstacles. You make the most out of the resources you have and you prefer moving forward and solving problems overachieving perfection.
Self-directed fast learner We believe in giving all team members abundant trust and ownership. You thrive when you are given freedom to strategize, execute and troubleshoot in your own domain whilst staying plugged in to adjacent work streams and aligned with the growth of the company as a whole. You are self-motivated and practical.
Collaborative It energizes you to work closely with our software and business development teams, with whom you’ll interface with regularly. You are a strong communicator and you’re a reliable team member.
Results driven You like to work towards an ambitious goal in a team. You see yourself thriving in a dynamic startup environment.
Kind & low ego We believe kindness is a form of excellence. You’re a culture add to our growing team.
Purpose fit You’re passionate about our mission to decarbonize rental homes! We love to see engagement in climate communities.
Required qualifications
We’re flexible on titles, but we are looking for evidence that you have the skills and experience to take the lead on software development.
Work experience as a software engineer Number of years is less important than what you’ve done during them. Previous startup experience is a plus.
Proficiency with full-stack architecture, cloud infrastructure, SQL databases Our stack is Django (Python) backend and currently Jinja+Bootstrap, and we anticipate moving to React+Typescript as we build out our more interactive dashboard experience. We are on Google Cloud Platform, and use a Postgres database. We don’t require recent experience in these specific frameworks and platforms, but we expect you’ll be up and running shortly, so some familiarity is a plus.
Experience owning your own engineering domain You have previously built (big or small) applications from scratch, implementing both backend and frontend. If any of these are open to share, please drop links in the application form so we can see some examples of your work.
NY based Everyone on our team comes to the office at least three days a week. We are based in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and will occasionally work in Manhattan. We support all employees to work remote 3-4 weeks every year to facilitate flexibility and trips on top of PTO.
