Employment Status: Full-Time

Salary: $24 p/h

A Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation employer partner is seeking a Shop Associate to join their team. The Shop Associate assists the Director of Production in facilitating the day-to-day operations of maintaining a functional shop. While their primary role is concerned with general shop operations, the Shop Associate also provides a limited amount of project support,
including certain purchases, direct labor, and material handling.

● Conduct primarily medium to heavy work (frequent / constant):
○ Stamina—stands for extended periods of time, sometimes performing repetitive work.
○ Strength—must be able to lift up to or in excess of 50 lbs (with or without assistance).
○ Dexterity—reach by extending hand(s) and arm(s) in either direction.
○ Mobility—walk and stand to execute certain job duties.
○ Seeing—see with visual acuity to operate tools, machinery, and equipment and to determine accuracy, neatness,
and thoroughness of work assigned.
○ Speaking—express or exchange ideas with clear communication skills by means of the spoken and written word.
○ Hearing—receive detailed information through oral communication; withstand noisy shop conditions.
Work Environment:
Generally speaking, the individual in this job will be expected to conduct work in the following work environment(s).
● Primarily work in a fabrication shop setting.
○ Subject to primarily indoor environmental conditions; occasional work conducted outdoors required.
○ Occasionally exposed to cold and heat during seasons of extreme temperature.
○ Subject to loud and noisy work environment(s).
○ Work in continuous proximity to moving machinery, mechanical parts, vehicles.
○ Work under continuous exposure to wood and metal shavings, grease and oil, finishing vapors, etc.

POSITION SUMMARY

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to a well-functioning shop by participating in, maintaining, and supporting shop environment and fabrication
    support systems.
  •  Monitor shop cleanliness and encourage and participate in daily, weekly and monthly cleaning practices.
  • Participate in the movement, handling, organizing and tracking of materials within the shop.
  • Assist in tool and equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Assist and / or execute facilities improvements.
  • Drive company vehicles for pickups and deliveries.
  • Drive company forklift and scissor lift.
  •  Perform mail, shipping and storage functions.
  •  Tracks and submits expenses/receipts to the Admin team.
  •  Provide direct labor on job specific fabrication work when necessary.
  • Follow instruction and directives from supervisory staff – Lead Fabricator(s), Production Engineer(s), (Senior) Project Managers,
    and others.
  • Minimize company exposure and risk.
  • Follow material and equipment safety guidelines and report unsafe conditions to the Shop Manager.
  • Ensure cleanliness of the work area: sweeping, clean/maintain hand tools, dispose of scrap, etc.

Requirements:

  • High School or GED with 1–3 years’ experience; some college work preferred.
  • Proficiency with or aptitude to achieve on-the-job proficiency with the following general computer software’s and applications:
  • Google Workspace, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and other Google Apps, MS Office Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel), Adobe Creative Cloud Suite
  • Knowledge of shop math.
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to safely operate a forklift and scissor lift.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints / shop drawings; knowledge of CAD helpful.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work with many team members.
  • Commitment to individual responsibility and accountability to completing work accurately in a timely manner.
