The Albert C. Wiltshire Employment Center recruits qualified candidates for positions within the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a 300-acre industrial park housing over 400+ businesses within the manufacturing, food, media, technology, and creative fields.

A Brooklyn Navy Yard-based art studio is seeking a part-time Studio Assistant.

About the Role:

The Studio is looking for a detail oriented individual to serve as an assistant with
all aspects of fabrication. The fabrication work is primarily woodshop based, but also
includes materials such as acrylic/plastics, fabrics and occasional casting processes.
Assistant will primarily be working collaboratively but may be asked to work
independently at times. Preference is given to those with ample diversified fabrication
skills and woodshop experience.

Examples of Responsibilities:
– Cut wood/lumber to specified sizes
– Mill wood/lumber into precisely square boards at a variety of different dimensions
– Sand wood sculpture forms using random orbital sander
– Apply wood finishes to completed wood forms
– Assist with any glue-up processes
– Cut milled wood into lengthwise polygon forms (ie octagonal column forms), using
the table saw
– Basic shop upkeep including sweeping/vacuuming saw dust throughout the process
and lubricating rust prone surfaces, as well as helping to keep the space organized.
– *Preference is given to applicants who can participate in fabrication problem solving
discussion.

Time Commitment:
– Three 3-4 hour work sessions per week
– Ideally Monday, Wednesday, Friday 3-6pm (There is some flexibility regarding
schedule)
– There is a possibility of increased hours if production exceeds expectations during
the first 6-12 months, maximum 15-20 hours per week

Qualifications & Skills:
– College level degree is preferred
– 5 years + experience with woodworking processes is preferred
– Minimum of 3 years experience with general woodshop use
– Must demonstrate firm working knowledge of miter saw, table saw, drill press, jointer, planer, sanding tools, circular saw, router, jig saw, and general knowledge of
corresponding dust collection equipment
– Must be able to lift/maneuver 50 lbs or more. Physical strength for moving lumber
and sculpture forms is encouraged.

Requirements:
– Must posses thorough knowledge of woodshop tools and machinery – fundamental
woodshop instruction will not be provided.
– Must work well collaboratively, as well as independently
– Must obey all woodshop safety measures and procedures
– Must be detail oriented throughout the process, in service of making finely crafted
artworks
– Must be comfortable working in a space that deals with a wide range of dialogue
related to contemporary art
– Must possess strong communication skills and a team player mentality
– Must be punctual and reliable
