Salary: $45/hr

The Albert C. Wiltshire Employment Center recruits qualified candidates for positions within the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a 300-acre industrial park housing over 400+ businesses within the manufacturing, food, media, technology, and creative fields.

A Yard-based business is seeking a full-time Machine Shop Supervisor.

Responsibilities:

The Machine Shop Supervisor will be responsible for monitoring the daily operation and output of the Machine Shop. They will work under the direction of the Machine Shop Superintendent and in coordination with internal and external stakeholders to achieve these goals. The ideal candidate will drive machine shop improvement initiatives through to completion, assist production in achieving a smooth and efficient flow of product through the machine shop, and identify new areas for process improvement.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have working knowledge of manually operated machine shop equipment including lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, vertical and horizontal boring mills, and line boring equipment. Applicants must be able to supervise shop functions including but not limited to the overhaul of cargo and ballast pumps, dewatering pumps, anchor winches, mooring winches, capstans, and gate and globe valves. Machine shop personnel assist outside machinists with the measurement of items onboard client vessels to ensure that items produced fit as required. The Machine Shop Supervisor will supervise these activities which will include the measurement of propeller shafts, bearing bores, rudder bores, rudder shafts, engine bearings and other shipboard items as required.

Ideal candidates will be able to:

  • Supervise machinists, fabricators and/or technicians through all phases of production in accordance with established schedules.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Participate in designing and building tooling needed for the production process.
  • Work within a safety management system.
  • Participate in the selection, retention and development of personnel including interviewing, performance appraisals and promotion recommendations.
  • Good interpersonal skills and supervisory experience required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills along with proficiency in use of MS Office suite.
  • Post secondary education in mechanical engineering or machine shop technology required; a minimum of five to seven years of related experience and/or training within a machine shop; or the combination of education and experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position.
  • Bilingual Spanish a plus.

Use of personal protective equipment such as respirators, hard hats and safety footwear is required while on work sites. Work will involve visiting work sites both indoors and outdoors at all times of the year.
