Salary: $115,000-$120,000/year
This is a hybrid position based in Brooklyn, NY – 3 days/week in office required.
Summary
The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is a not-for-profit organization that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Yard on behalf of its owner, the City of New York. BNYDC strives to provide an environment in which innovative companies can take root and grow.
The Director of Communications will streamline and execute communications strategies that help promote the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a signature business opportunity in New York City’s industrial and commercial real estate landscape. Helping to lead external communications, you will ensure the strength and continuity of BNYDC’s brand across all platforms.
Areas of Responsibility
- Write and edit communications collateral such as press releases, media advisories, op-eds, briefing memos, talking points, etc.
- Pitch and position BNYDC Executive Leaders in thought leadership opportunities
- Prepare leaders across the organization for speaking engagements such as panels, conferences, etc.
- Develop and maintain press lists and reporter relationships
- Maintain project pace and trajectories for successful execution of communication initiatives
- Draft compelling, strategic content for the BNYDC website and other collateral as needed
- Guide staff in communication initiatives to ensure content is cohesive and impactful
- Foster strong relationships with external stakeholders and agencies to achieve collaborative success
- Manage third-party public relations firm(s)
- Support the broader External Affairs team in various projects
- Provide staffing support for events, including those occasionally held on evenings and weekends

- Knowledge of industrial/commercial real estate, urban manufacturing, workforce development, and the green economy
- Familiarity with the legal distinctions between public, private, and social sectors preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Experience with Word Press preferred
Qualifications
- 5-7 years of experience in government/non-profit experiences in communications, journalism or a related field
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field; Master’s degree preferred
- Experience implementing comprehensive communications plans
