A Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation employer partner seeking a focused, positive, and hardworking Gardeners to support our Garden Maintenance team. Gardeners are aesthetically driven, hard working individuals who can maintain our standards of sustainable landscaping for indoor and outdoor gardens. While this is NOT a farming position, experience in agriculture and farming practices will be considered an asset.
This position requires early mornings and physical labor in varied weather conditions, as well as travel to client sites across New York City.
SCHEDULE:
• Monday–Friday, pre-scheduled workdays (schedule may vary weekly)
• Full Time: 32–40 hours/week, March–December
• Part Time: 24–32 hours/week, March–November
• Workdays may begin as early as 6:00 AM
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Maintenance of a variety of urban commercial and residential gardens and landscapes, including but not limited to green roofs, terraces, indoor tropicals, ground level gardens, street tree beds, and edible landscapes
• Perform all aspects of plant maintenance, including but not limited to planting, pruning, deadheading, weeding, mulching, irrigating, plant and disease treatment, mowing, holiday decor, and cleaning/sweeping. Additional responsibilities may include carrying out farming duties, not limited to harvesting, soil cultivation, and bed preparation
• Hand-water indoor and outdoor plants
• Travel independently to garden sites in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens
• Drive via company vehicles to Long Island plant nurseries as needed
• Uphold our standards for respect, professionalism, efficiency, and community at all times
• Communicate clearly with department management and team
• Log daily tasks and garden observations in company’s online record system
• Contribute to the upkeep of our facility spaces, including our tool storage, plant nursery, and vehicles
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
• Has 1+ year experience in landscaping, gardening, or horticulture. Additional experience in agriculture will be considered an asset
• Has experience and general knowledge of garden installations and maintenance
• Is positive, energetic, eager to learn new skills, and has a strong work ethic
• Is punctual, time efficient, and is responsible
• Can take direction and is a team player, communicates clearly
• Demonstrates respect for client sites; is attentive to site safety
• Is a doer: upon finishing a task, will immediately begin undertaking another; thinks big picture while also being attentive to the details; looks ahead to determine what needs to get done
• Is comfortable working on rooftops, near ledges, and at other heights, while wearing appropriate safety gear
• Can lift 50 lbs. repeatedly, and can squat, kneel, bend over, and reach for extended periods of time
• Has a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and is comfortable driving
