Employment Status: Full-Time

Salary: $35 p/h

A Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation employer partner is seeking a Lead Carpenter. We are seeking a Lead Carpenter to oversee the fabrication and installation of scenic builds for live events, television, film, and branded environments. This role is responsible for translating design drawings into accurate, durable builds while leading shop carpenters and coordinating with project managers, designers, and installation crews.

The Lead Carpenter sets the pace and standard for quality, efficiency, and safety in the shop and on site.

Key Responsibilities:

Fabrication & Build:
-Lead construction of scenic elements including flats, platforms, stages, set walls, custom props, and architectural elements
-Interpret shop drawings, CAD files, and construction documents
-Execute precise layouts, cuts, joinery, and assemblies
-Ensure builds meet structural, aesthetic, and schedule requirements
-Select appropriate materials and construction methods for temporary scenic structures

Team Leadership:
-Supervise carpenters and fabrication assistants in the shop
-Assign tasks and manage workflow to meet production deadlines
-Train junior carpenters on scenic construction techniques
-Maintain a professional and organized shop environment

Project Coordination:
-Collaborate with designers, project managers, and CNC operators to execute builds accurately
-Participate in build planning and problem solving
-Communicate fabrication progress and potential issues early

Installation & Strike:
-Lead on-site installation of scenic builds for events, TV sets, and film productions
-Coordinate with rigging, lighting, and scenic paint teams
-Ensure efficient load-in and load-out operations

Shop Operations:
-Maintain tools, equipment, and fabrication areas
-Follow shop safety standards and production protocols
-Manage material usage and minimize waste

Required Skills & Experience:
-5+ years professional carpentry experience in scenic fabrication, theater, events, film, or TV production
-Strong ability to read shop drawings and construction documents
-Experience building temporary scenic structures and set pieces
-Proficiency with common shop tools including: Table saw, Miter saw, Track saw, Router, Pneumatic nailers and staplers
-Strong understanding of: Scenic framing methods, Platform construction, Set walls and flats, Modular scenic systems

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience in high-volume scenic shops or event fabrication studios
-Ability to interpret CNC-produced components and digital fabrication files
-Familiarity with CAD drawings (AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Rhino, etc.)
-Experience leading install crews on site
-Basic metalworking or welding knowledge

Physical Requirements:
-Ability to lift 50+ lbs
-Comfortable working on ladders and lifts
-Ability to work extended hours during production deadlines and installs
