The RFP seeks to commission and display the work of local artists between May and November 2025 along Flushing Avenue
Submissions are due December 15, 2024
BROOKLYN, NY (November 12, 2024) — The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) today released a request for proposals (RFP) seeking to identify and commission a talented, Brooklyn-based artist or artist collective to display public art along Flushing Avenue between Clermont Avenue and Carlton Avenue. The selected artwork will be prominently on view from May through November of next year and will be seen by thousands of visitors, as well as those who pass by the Yard daily. The full RFP is available here.
The RFP states that artists must respond to the theme of “Our Brooklyn” and are encouraged to submit proposals highlighting the intersection of economic growth and a community’s social and cultural elements while celebrating the breadth of innovators and workers at the Yard and in Brooklyn. Emphasis should be placed on ways that communities come together through work, social, and cultural life. Submissions should celebrate cultural diversity and the richness that develops through shared dialogue and community engagement. The Yard has a proud legacy of art and industry and a campus that has supported innovation for 200+ years. As such, artists should thoughtfully include the Yard’s history and legacy in their work, but proposals should adhere to the contemporary theme of “Our Brooklyn” as it relates to Brooklyn today.
“As a cornerstone of the great borough of Brooklyn, we dedicate this public RFP to underscoring how economic growth, culture, and community are all intertwined in our everyday lives,” said Shanny Spraus-Reinhardt, Executive Vice President and Chief Impact Officer, Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation. “Public art has always worked to spearhead important conversations and inspire necessary movements. We welcome submissions that serve to keep the dialogue focused on progress, pride, and a celebration of Brooklyn.”
In bidding for the RFP, artists are encouraged to submit work that aligns with the theme of “Our Brooklyn” conceptually and through materials that can be modified, changed, adapted, and reused. Eligible artists include anyone currently working at a Yard-based business and/or residing in Kings County at the time of submission. Group submissions require every member to be a current resident of Brooklyn. Former Brooklyn residents and Yard workers will not be considered.
Submissions can also include the activation of Building 92 as an extension of the primary design, including but not limited to the fence line outside the building and its forecourt. Selected respondents will also have their work featured in three public programs, including the opening reception in May 2025.
The deadline to submit proposals is Friday, December 15, 2024. Artists and artist collectives can register for an on-site and virtual information session on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. More information about the criteria for selection and proposal requirements can be found here.
